2021 History Festival Opening Event

Knowing the Past: In Conversation

South Australia’s History Festival, one of the state’s largest open-access community events, will open on Thursday 29 April with a special In Conversation event presented by the History Trust of South Australia.

Held at the Adelaide Town Hall, the event hosted by Dr Jared Thomas and Dr Skye Krichauff will examine the complexities of Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal understandings of past experiences and how different ways of knowing shape the practice of history.

Dr Jared Thomas, a Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges is an international award winning author and the Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and Cultural Material at the South Australian Museum. Jared’s pursuits through the South Australian Museum explore new methodologies and models for engaging Aboriginal people and communities in the telling of their stories and the custodianship of their material culture. Dr Skye Krichauff is an ethno-historian who combines the methodologies of history and anthropology. She is interested in colonial cross-cultural relations, the relationship between history and memory, and how societies live with historical injustices (in particular how Australians live with the enduring legacies of colonialism).

This year the History Festival is exploring the theme of ‘change’. From political change to social change. Changing places, changing minds, changing hearts. The opening event will look at the different ways we explore our past in accordance with the norms of our culture and society. In evaluating the ways we make sense of different parts of our personal and national history, we hope to unearth new ideas about moving forward and creating change.
