Singer Car Club of SA

till 14th June 2008

The Singer Car Club of South Australia was formed in 1983 by a group of regular South Australian participants at the Singer National Rallies. The club went on to become incorporated in 1987. In 2008 the Singer Car Club of South Australia will host the National Singer Rally for the fourth time, this event will be held in the Riverland at Berri. The Singer Car club now has 34 members with two members with three or more cars. The club Magazine “Singergram,” is still being produced quarterly having started in 1985.

The Singer Car Club’s display includes the following vehicles:

· A 1935 1100c Saloon which was restored in Western Australia and brought to S. A. for the Singer Car Centenary in 2004. It has been extensively rallied and taken part in Bay to Birdwood, All British Days and the Australia Day Parades.

· A 1952 1500cc 4AD - SM Roadster which was the last of the sports cars manufactured by Singer following the success of a range of popular sports models spanning a period of approximately 20 years. It is capable of 80 mph. It was exported to New Zealand from England before arriving restored to South Australia.

· A 1949 A Series 1074c Roadster which was the first of the Roadsters exported from England after the second world war. The next model in 1950 was the 4A with independent front suspension and in 1952 became the 4AD with a 1500c engine known as the SM Roadster. This Roadster has a beam axle with one or two improvements. This car has been restored by Moss Upton and Brian Graeber of Lobethal over a period of twenty years. Brian is the last of the original Singer Dealers.

· A 1934 Le Mans 4c OHC Twin Carb. 972cc two Seater. The Singer Le Mans model was produced to celebrate the success of the Singer Works team that had competed at the 1933 Le Mans 24 hour race. Several cars identical with this one entered and the team leader completed 2203kms in the 24 hours averaging 91.8 km/hour becoming the first car under one litre to complete this demanding race. This particular car was restored 30 years ago by Robert Holmes a’Çourt. The car was reportedly entered into the Pebble Beach (USA) Concorse de Elegance and enjoyed a class win. It was exhibited in a’Çourt’s Heytesbury Museum until his death.
