MAC Safe Driving Interactive‘Safe Driving’ is an interactive display designed to generate the importance of being wary and alert when driving a vehicle and to test the users’ response to potential hazards. Designed to enforce awareness of the dangers of tailgating, disobeying road rules and using a mobile phone when driving. It comprises of a computer program displaying images to an LCD monitor mounted into the front half of a car. The user has a steering wheel, accelerator and a brake. During the game, if the user gets too close to the car in front, uses the mobile phone or disobeys any road rules a message is displayed regarding their infringement, thereby demonstrating the importance of paying attention when driving a motor vehicle. The project currently falls within what the Police and MAC are trying to educate to drivers regarding safe distances, paying attention and speed. It is hoped that this educational tool will promote the transference of knowledge in a meaningful way, and encourage a change in behaviour, reducing the incidents of road trauma. The display provides an opportunity to experience potential risks as a road user and raise awareness of the dangers involved in driving. The user participates in a role-play as a driver, and therefore encounters the danger ‘first-hand’ and becomes aware of the risk through a sensory experience rather than acquiring the information in a more distant – rules-to-follow approach. The ultimate aim of this particular interactive is to demonstrate that all road users need to co-operate, take care and be responsible.
