To Have and to Holden: An Australian Love Affair
on now until 19 June 2008
When it comes to symbols of Australian passion for motoring, there is no greater icon than the Holden motor car. The story of one of Australia’s favourite motoring brands is the focus of this latest exhibition.
2008 is a year of anniversaries for GM-Holden – 60 years since the first Holden-badged car was produced, 100 years of General Motors (GM-Holden’s parent company in the US) and 30 years since the release of the first Commodore.
But the Holden name and its association with the transport industry goes back much further – more than 150 years.
When J.A. Holden started his leather and saddlery business in Adelaide in 1856, he could not have predicted that more than 150 years later the Holden brand would be recognised nationally, and that the company would be exporting around the globe.
Come on a journey through the exhibition and explore the history of one of Australia’s best known companies, through boom times, wars and depression.
Drawing on resources from the Museum’s own collection, the Holden archives at the State Library of South Australia and Holden’s own collection, this exhibition – incorporating facsimile documents, text, images and objects – will provide an overview of the history GM-Holden.
As well as looking at vehicle design and production, To Have and to Holden will also feature a section looking at Holden’s interaction with the community.
Significant items to feature in the exhibition include:
- Torana GTR-X – A centrepiece of the exhibition, this legendary Torana model has become a part of Holden folklore. Originally intended for limited production only two prototypes were ever made.
- First Holden model – The 48-215 was the first true Holden badged under the company name.
- Whistle from Holden Woodville factory – The factory whistle operated for over sixty years and was heard throughout surrounding suburbs.
- Rare collection of Holden Memorabilia – Items available to Holden employees only, collected over a 38 year period.
