War Brides – Our Stories

The Legacy War Brides Group

3 September – 26 November 2000

Opened the Hon. Robert Lucas MLC, Treasurer and Minister for Industry and Trade

This exhibition told the story of the many women, from various countries, who came to Australia after marrying Australian soldiers during the two world wars. The display featured photographs, memorabilia and costumes, including wedding dresses. The women shared stories of coming to a far away land, after having known their husbands only briefly, and of forging new lives and relationships, often with language barriers and living with in-laws they had never met before.
