Keeping the Evidence of SA's Cultural Diversity

The bulk of the Migration Museum collection is devoted to objects that record Cultural Diversity in South Australia. Cultural diversity is broadly defined as referring to a person’s, or group’s, geographic origin and place of living, race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status or age. It can also include the social, cultural, ideological and spiritual beliefs and practices that influence a person or group.

Objects range from household items, passports and identity documents through to a collection of beautiful costumes. These are chosen according to guidelines set out in the Migration Museum Acquisition Policy. Under these guidelines the Museum collects objects that it is able to keep and display adequately, that have a history linked to South Australia and that act as a memory aid for the stories of individuals and/or groups.
