Lithuanian Costume

This costume belonged to Janina Mazelis who arrived in Australia in 1949 as part of the displaced persons program. Janina was only able to bring a few items with her, but she also brought her skills as a weaver and created many beautiful pieces using traditional Lithuanian designs. The costume may have been brought from Lithuania. Items such as these demonstrate the cultural traditions and heritage that many migrants bring with them to South Australia.

Janina was a gynaecologist, but her qualifications were not recognised in Australia. She did not succeed in requalifying for medical school in Australia but continued to work in the medical field, first serving out a work contract by nursing. Janina worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for many years, in charge of the blood transfusion service. Her colleagues bestowed the honorary title of doctor on her during this time.
