About the Museum

The Migration Museum works towards the preservation, understanding and enjoyment of South Australia’s diverse cultures. It is a place to discover the many identities of the people of South Australia through the stories of individuals and communities.

The Museum houses a number of permanent exhibitions on the immigration and settlement history of South Australia and an exhibition on the history of the site. In addition the Museum hosts and develops a number of changing exhibitions and public programs.

Another feature of the Museum is Settlement Square. Here the contribution of the Migration Museum Foundation members is acknowledged. The inscribed pavers have become a popular focus within the museum. Overlooking the square from just inside the museum's gate is the Italian designed monument of The Immigrants.

Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005

The Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005 states that each State authority (as defined under the Act) must prepare a management plan within 2-years after adoption of the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy. That strategy ‘Towards 2020’, prepared by the Adelaide Park Lands Authority, has now been adopted.

For the cultural heritage institutions under the care and control of the Minister for the Arts, Arts SA has developed a draft Management Plan which outlines the existing purpose of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Migration Museum, South Australian Museum and the State Library of South Australia and their important and historic role in preserving the park lands for the benefit of present and future generations.

Public consultation is invited in February 2012. Click here for a copy of the draft Management Plan. All comments can be made to Arts SA at the contact details below. A public meeting will be held at the end of the consultation period.

If you would like to make comment or register for the public meeting, please contact Mimi Crowe, Manager, Cultural Heritage, at Arts SA on 8463 5426 or crowe.mimi@dpc.sa.gov.au.
