World’s largest continually staged historic motoring event Bay to Birdwood Classic Sunday 30 September 2007 Media Release - August 2007 Record crowds are expected to turn out for the Bay to Birdwood Classic event. It first began in 1980 with 637 vehicles - a far cry from this year’s Classic, which has attracted 1,750 vehicles built between 1956 and 1977. The journey begins at Barratt Reserve Adelaide Shores (West Beach) at 9am and vehicles travel the 70-kilometre route (via Anzac Highway, Greenhill Road, Dequetteville Tce and Hackney Road to North East Road, then on to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. It will take the cavalcade almost two hours to pass any given point along the route. Each year tens of thousands of spectators turn out to watch the cars, trucks, motor cycles and fire engines from yesteryear pass them by. For many families and friends the last Sunday in September is a traditional time to meet and set up picnic sites or barbecues all along the route. The public is invited to Adelaide Shores or take the alternate route and travel along the South Eastern Freeway to join the festivities at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood from 10am until 5pm. The first entrant cars begin arriving at Birdwood from around 10.30am. There’s something for everyone at the Finish - from viewing the Concours d’ elegance entries and judging of cars, Fashions in the Field, to a full classic entertainment program with our MC Tommy Kaye including live bands, Boomers, Holly & the Buddies, Blue Comets and The Hydramatics, dancing demos from the Adelaide Rock and Roll Club and lots of local food and wine.
