Zonta Women's WorkMedia Release - September 2007 Zonta International presents an exhibition on their work in South Australia and around the world in the community Forum Gallery at the Migration Museum. Founded in 1919 Zonta International is a global organization which works to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. There are eleven clubs based in South Australia and more than 1, 200 Zonta Clubs worldwide. Members volunteer their time, talents and money to projects aimed at furthering women’s education, leadership and youth development. Two projects featured in the Women’s Work exhibition have been developed by the Zonta International District 23 group, these are Zonta Birthing Kits and Breast Care Cushions. Zonta Birthing Kits are an initiative of the Zonta Club of the Adelaide Hills, Inc. The kits provide basic materials which allow women in developing countries to give birth in a clean, safe environment, in situations where women may otherwise needlessly die from infection and disease. The Zonta Birthing Kit project has been hugely successful and now runs nationally, receiving formal sponsorship from AusAID in addition to the support of Zonta Clubs and individuals. The Breast Care Cushions project began in New South Wales and now runs through Zonta clubs across Australia with a large number of South Australian members taking part. The aim of creating the cushions is to provide comfort to women recovering from breast cancer surgery through the distribution of specially made cushions. The cushions are worn to help prevent injuries from bumps and seatbelts. Throughout the year Zonta Clubs in Australia hold sewing bees to make these sought-after cushions. The Women’s Work exhibition will also feature the personal testimonials of local members from a range of backgrounds. Education programs run in conjunction with the exhibition will enable school children to talk to Zonta members and to take part in assembling Birthing Kits.
