Crew over-bored! Maritime Museum Needs VolunteersMedia Release - March 2007 The South Australian Maritime Museum is looking for volunteers to crew the historic timber police launch Archie Badenoch. The 40-foot timber launch Archie Badenoch was built in November 1942 by GMH as a supply tender for the Royal Australian Navy. After World War II it was acquired by the South Australian Police and served as the Number 1 Water Police Launch. The vessel was named after Mounted Constable Archibald Badenoch, the first South Australian Police Officer to be killed in action during the Second World War at El Alamein, North Africa on 1 November 1942. Today, Archie Badenoch is crewed by volunteers who take museum visitors on-board for a tour of the Port River to see the working port, the natural environment and to spot the resident pod of dolphins. As well as seeing the dolphins, the vessel’s hydrophone enables them to hear the dolphin’s clicks and whistles as they navigate the river. Skippers need a coxswains certificate and deck hands need to know elements of shipboard safety. For more information on this rewarding opportunity; call the Museum’s Operations Manager, Joan Simpson, on 8207 6262. what democracy in the future could look like Media Contact: Lee Tillett, Marketing Coordinator, History Trust of South Australia.
