Country Connections in the Barossa Valley

Media Release - June 2007

The History Trust of South Australia will host the 16th annual State History Conference in Tanunda from 3 – 5 August 2007.

The beautiful Barossa Valley will provide the ideal location to explore the historical issues at the heart of the conference theme, Country Connections.

The conference is an opportunity for those with a passion for history to come together to discuss, debate and share their ideas. Presenters will bring a myriad of perspectives to the conference, interweaving the local and the national to create a broader sense of South Australian and Australian history.

Papers will cover a wide variety of topics, including Federation, shipping and trade, immigration, farming, women, food, gardens, mining, wine, war and art to connect with broader historical debates about conflict, discrimination and reconciliation, division and social hierarchies, and the challenges and opportunities that change brings.

Local and personal stories will explore responses to change, expressed through the skills, talents, cultural expressions, contribution and commitment, kindness, hopes and dreams of communities in the past – all components in the construction of our historical memory.

Conference Organiser, Kate Walsh says, “The conference program is rich in new stories. They reveal how we have used our country landscape and, through our connections to global and national trends, created a rich and complex regional culture and way of life. We invite all to come and enjoy the opportunity to put together more of the pieces of SA history’s jigsaw”.

The conference is open to the public and registration forms are available by telephoning the History Trust on 8203 9888 or from http://www.history.sa.gov.au/chu/programs/history_conference.htm
