Steam Tug Yelta

Since its restoration in 1985 young and old have been given the unique opportunity to marvel at the workings of a triple expansion steam engine as well as enjoy cruises on the Port River on Steam Tug Yelta.

Yelta cruises the Port on a regular basis throughout the year, taking visitors on ‘dolphin seeking’ trips as well as offering passengers the chance to discover the treats of Port Adelaide from the water. The historic wharves and sheds, factories and industries, Submarine Corporation, Torrens Island, Quarantine Station and the glorious mangroves are some of the highlights. Companies, groups and conference organizers also use Yelta for special occasions like a cocktail party on a balmy summer evening.

This unique vessel was built in 1949 and after 27 years of towing vessels in and out of Port Adelaide Yelta was retired in November 1976 as South Australia’s last fully operational steam tug. Purchased in 1985 it was restored to its former glory by an army of skilled volunteers.

Today, Yelta is once again a familiar sight and enjoys newly found fame on the Port River.
