Presented by the Port River Guides Unit, this display was created to show the wide diversity of activities that are available to the young girls of our community and especially the water activities that are so much a part of Port Adelaide’s character. In 1985 the idea of a water activities training centre was born and by 1987 it came to fruition and was named G.T.S Dolphin. The centre was built by the Girl Guides Association (as it was called then) with the assistance of local community groups, and funded by grants and sponsorship. Display co-ordinator Lisa Knill says “G.T.S stands for Guide Training Ship and the Dolphin context is due to the presence of the famous Port River dolphins that are a regular visitor to the property located at Snowden’s Beach.” The exhibition features a heritage Sea Ranger uniform, old and new badges with their syllabus, and numerous books from London where the guide movement originated. There is also a brief history and photographs of GTS Dolphin. The Port River Guides, girls aged from seven to twelve years, have provided their experiences of guide meetings and camps at GTS Dolphin. Guides South Australia is part of the worldwide movement of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, with more than ten million members over 145 countries. Black Diamond Corner, the South Australian Maritime Museum’s Community Access Gallery provides a place where community groups can present displays about their views of South Australia’s maritime history and/or that of Port Adelaide. The primary aim of the gallery is to foster interaction between the local community and the Museum. The Museum invites community groups to use the gallery and offers curatorial guidance and assistance, from planning through to production and installation. Their
display might tell the stories of local icons or institutions, immigrant
voyages, the working and shipping life of the Port, the history of people living
in Port Adelaide, or any aspect of our maritime history that is important to
them.
