Welcome

The South Australian Maritime Museum is an ideal learning environment for students to explore South Australia’s unique history, our relationship with maritime culture and the marine environment. The museum offers exciting and varied exhibits in the historic Bond Store, an original lighthouse and Port River cruises onboard the Archie Badenoch.

Schools are able to participate in a variety of programs at the museum and within the Port Adelaide area. Programs cover a wide range of curriculum areas and year levels and provide hands-on and discovery based learning experiences.

A DECS Education Officer, based at the South Australian Maritime Museum develops and delivers programs to complement exhibitions and events and is available to support teachers with designing successful learning experiences for their students.

The Maritime Museum recognises with respect the traditional owners of the land upon which our Museum is built.

Wrecked!

Wrecked! Tragedy and the Southern Seas
Opens Friday June 13th

Tells the disastrous stories of some of the State’s 850-shipwrecks.

The early South Australian colony was totally dependent upon the sea for trade, industry, culture, migration, travel and survival. Ships that were wrecked could lose an entire community’s supplies, or goods being exported that would have generated much-needed finance. These were also the days when travel by ship could be dangerous.
