Heysen, Hans
Heysen trained as an artist in Adelaide. He showed such promise that between 1899 and 1903 four Adelaide patrons assisted him financially to study in Paris and visit various countries in Europe.

Beadell, Len - Explorer, Surveyor and Engineer

Douglas Mawson Exhibition

Eyre, Edward John
Edward John Eyre (1815-1901), together with his aboriginal friend Wylie, was the first man to cross southern Australia from east to west, travelling across the Nullarbor Plain from Adelaide to Albany.

Flinders, Matthew
Matthew Flinders circumnavigated Australia and was the first explorer to do so.

Stuart, John McDouall
Stuart and his Companions who, in 1862, completed the first European crossing of Australia from Adelaide to Van Diemen Gulf, passing through the centre and returning safely along the same route.

Sturt, Charles
Captain Charles Sturt (1795-1869) was born in India in 1795. This was about the same time that Bass & Flinders started to explore Australia's coastline. Sturt fought against Napoleon's army in Spain and at Waterloo. Because of his ability, his commanders made him a Captain and sent him to Australia with his army regiment in 1827.

Flynn, John - Flynn of the Inland
John Flynn was born at Moliagul in Central Victoria on 25 November 1880, the same year famous Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly, was executed. His father, Thomas Eugene Flynn, a school teacher, married Rosetta Lester in April 1876.

David Unaipon was born on 28 September 1872 at Raukkan (Point McLeay) Mission in the Tailem Bend area, South Australia. He attended the mission school from the age of seven.

Mitchell, Roma
Dame Roma Mitchell, former South Australian Governor died on March 5. She was Australia's first woman Queen's Counsel, the first woman Court Judge in Australia and as Governor or South Australia, was the first woman in Australia to achieve this honour. Dame Roma Mitchell had a brilliant career.

O'Donoghue, Lois
Lois O'Donoghue, one of Australia's best known public figures, did not know her mother until she was 35. Mike Brown tells the story of her extraordinary life. Lois O'Donoghue was short-listed to become Governor-General of Australia.

Donald Allan Dunstan was born in Suva, Fiji on 21 September 1926. After early schooling he transferred to South Australia and attended Murray Bridge High School, St Peter's College, and the University of Adelaide, graduating with a law degree in 1948.

Gilfillan, Ian
Ian Gilfillan's interest in politics began in 1969, when he joined the former Australia Party. Ian was the No 1 candidate for the Senate in 1974. In 1982 Ian was elected to the South Australian Parliament as a Legislative Councillor, becoming leader in 1985.

Hawke, Bob
Robert James Lee Hawke (Prime Minister 1983 ) was born in Bordertown, S.A. in 1929. He is the son of a Congregational Minister and nephew of a Western Australian Premier.

Bragg, William Henry
William Henry Bragg was born at Westward, Cumberland, on July 2, 1862. He was educated at Market Harborough Grammar School and afterwards at King William's College, Isle of Man. Elected a minor scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1881

William Lawrence Bragg was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1890. He was the eldest child of William Henry and Gwendoline Bragg. He had a brother, Bob, who was one year younger than he, and a sister Gwendolen who was seventeen years his junior.

Florey, Howard
Sir Howard Walter Florey was born on September 24, 1898, at Adelaide, South Australia, the son of Joseph and Bertha Mary Florey. His early education was at St. Peter's Collegiate School, Adelaide, following which he went on to Adelaide University
