Saluting Their Service commemorations program

The Federal Government’s commemorations program, Saluting Their Service, aims to highlight the sacrifice and service of Australia's servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since Federation and to promote appreciation and understanding of the role that those who have served have played in shaping the nation.  Saluting Their Service is administered by the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Saluting Their Service supports commemorative activities and educational programs so that Australians may learn about and acknowledge the events of our wartime years; the significance of those events in shaping our nation; and stories of the people who experienced those years, their bravery and suffering.  Importantly, the roles played by men and women in local communities throughout Australia in serving our nation can be acknowledged and promoted.

A key part of the program is encouraging understanding of our wartime history at a national and community level.  The Sharing Their Legacy project in South Australia is one of several museum initiatives, which aims to highlight the importance of wartime memorabilia.  The Department works with heritage bodies, such as the History Trust of South Australia, to build collection management and interpretation skills among ex-service and historical organisations and encourage the development of public displays and exhibitions.  Individual groups and organisations can also apply for small grants to preserve and restore war memorials and memorabilia under the Commemorations Grants Program.

Further information about the program can be found on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website.
