Mile Post
Mile posts were originally erected by the Highways Department at one-mile intervals on most arterial roads during the 1920s and 1930s. Timber mile posts were later replaced by concrete, which were more durable but did require maintenance and upkeep to repaint the numbers. After metric conversion into kilometres in July 1974, small metal markers replaced the mile-posts and were positioned at 5 kilometre intervals. |
