Museums Accreditation and Grants Program (MAGP)
The History Trust's Museums Accreditation and Grants Program (MAGP) is an assistance and grants program for South Australia's community, local and specialist museums. The Program is managed by staff of the Trust's Community History Unit. It is a voluntary program. Organisations accepted into the Program are those that are committed to acknowledging and operating according to accepted museum ethics, standards, protocols and practices. Their museums are well-managed, publicly accountable and sustainable into the future. They manage the museum site, which includes display and storage spaces, so that it is well-maintained and appealing to visitors. They manage a collection which reflects the museum’s purpose. They present their local/community/specialist history and collection through displays and other public programs. They are of sufficient scope, size and operation to attract and maintain audiences and a network of supporters. Participating organisations are variously constituted, but may include branches of the National Trust, or separately incorporated bodies, or local government museums. The Program, however, is not intended for local history groups and community archives that do not operate the full range of museum functions, as described above and in the Handbook for Registered and Accredited Museums. School, church and sporting club archives and collections which do not have an active display and interpretation program are generally not considered eligible to join the Program because of the limited nature of their activities. However, staff of the Community History Unit consider all enquiries to join the Program on a case by case basis. Privately-owned museums and collections are ineligible to join. This program:
Standards are set at two levels:
The Trust reviews all registered and accredited museums on a regular and on-going basis. The Museums Accreditation and Grants Program will adopt the new National Standards for Community Museums currently being developed by the National Standards Taskforce whose members are representatives from State agencies which administer museums standards programs, Museums Australia and the Collections Council of Australia. These national standards are due to be finalised in May 2008 after an extensive period of community consultation. A Handbook for Registered and Accredited Museums has been produced by the Community History Unit to assist in the process of applying for museum registration/accreditation. The Handbook contains the essential guidelines, an explanation of the required standards, and basic information on museum management. It also explains the application process. Museums considering applying for registration/accreditation must consult the Handbook and contact Kate Walsh, Manager, Community History Unit on 08 8203 9878 or kwalsh@history.sa.gov.au. ACCESSING GRANTS Community museums and historical societies registered or accredited under the History Trust’s Museums Accreditation and Grants Program can apply on an annual basis for grants to undertake the following types of projects:
