Advice  Assistance  Training

 

The Community History Unit offers the following services:

For museums and historical societies:

  • Advice on attaining registration and accreditation status under the Museums Accreditation and Grants Program
  • Referral to designers, museum consultants, professional historians and editors
  • Training workshops, including:
    • Museum strategic planning, development and review
    • Organising your museum: basic museum practices
    • Collections management, including
      • Developing and implementing policies and procedures on donations, disposal, reproduction and loans

      • Cataloguing
      • Computer databases in museums (non-technical)
      • Storage and handling of collections
      • Assessing the Significance of your collection
      • Disaster Preparedness and Identifying Risks
      • Preventive conservation in museums
    • Exhibitions and public programs, including

      • How to do history research
      • Writing and editing for displays
      • Using photographs and objects in displays
      • Using costume and textiles in displays
      • Designing and installing exhibitions
      • Education Programs
      • Community access, ownership and involvement
      • Volunteers, training them and keeping them
    • Marketing, sponsorship and promoting your museum

For individual authors, historians, researchers, museums, historical societies and the general public:

  • Advice and assistance on historical research, including guides to sources
  • Advice and assistance on writing history and oral history projects
  • Advice and assistance on photo searches
  • Access to History Resource Centre and Glass Negatives Collection
  • Advice on the preservation of historical items
  • Advice on finding the right ‘home’ for historical treasures
